12-44 does not necessarily indicate an ugly loss, but the actual game itself matters: how they played and whether they narrowed the gap, if only a little. I don't think it was an ugly loss because Japan conceded only four tries to Ireland. Ireland scored 18 points from six penalties. It is rare in a one-sided game. The causes of penalties from Japan's perspective are (1) they mostly play in their own territory, and (2) there are many infringements. From the Irish perspective, they “have not broken Japan completely”. The problem in this game was “no tries”, in other words, they could not “construct the game”. It should have been a close game if they had presented their offending format as a team.
