The number of tries was one for Japan and eight for Tonga. The way Japan collapsed cast dark clouds over the potential road ahead as the expectation was so high for this first match. In the first minute of the match, Tonga put pressure on the first scrum awarded to them to the right. Their stand-off attacked straight. The bulky forward players made a dash for the side one after another from five rucks in a row, and scored the first try of the match. Tonga was awarded a scrum 10 times and 11 times for Japan, but Japan could not get the ball out properly in any of those. Japan was overwhelmed by Tonga's powerful forwards with an average weight of 112 kilograms. Japan's eight forwards lacked cohesiveness, too.
