Japan's defence worked hard to keep the score to 9-22 in the first half, but the game became one-sided after this. Japan lost the game, scoring only two penalties and one drop goal.
In the 12th minute, stand-off Ando opened the scoring with a penalty. Japan pushed forward aggressively by stealing the opponent's ball from a lineout and pushing into their territory. However, Samoa did not miss the momentary hesitation cast over Japan, and scored their first try in the 17th minute. Japan scored another penalty in the 20th minute. Samoa started to adapt to Japan's defence. Until this point, whenever a Samoan player received a pass, he started running straight away, but now they slowed down for a moment, and then accelerated before Japan could react. Japan conceded tries consecutively in this way in the final ten minutes of the first half.
