NZ Junior won all four games including the 8-38 win against Japan and became the first champion of the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Japan managed to escape an ugly loss against this superpower with fullback Miyake scoring a try. The XV received the news of Hiroaki Shukuzawa, the former reinforcement committee head during the tour, and wore the mourning bands for this match.
Japan was missing both flanker Asano and wing Ohata due to injury. Lock Ono, who was appointed as the captain in this tour, was proud of the team: “We did more than we thought we could. The persistent defence we demonstrated today will help us build confidence.” Japan's signature “low-altitude tackle”, in which the tackler dives to below the knees of the opponent, nipped the buds of opportunity for the opponent. Even in the scrum, which Japan lost 50 points in in three consecutive matches, they did well and disturbed the opponent's ball twice in the second half. In the 32nd minute of the second half, fullback Miyake caught his own short punt and dived into the in-goal line. “The previous games were just too bad. I am not surprised with the result,” said head coach Elissalde with an expression of relief.
