Japan dominated the first half in attack and defence. Japan scored a penalty by Ando, a try from a maul in the 18th minute and another try in the 36th minute by fullback Tatekawa from consecutive possessions. As for the defence, they conceded only one penalty to Fiji. However, in the second half, they conceded a penalty easily when taken advantage of during a mistake at a kick-off. This boosted Fiji, who then made a counterattack and scored a try in the 11th minute and 14th minute, and turned the game around. The result was Japan's disappointing come-from-ahead 15-30 loss. “We lost a winnable match, against a winnable opponent,” commented head coach Kirwan.
