Japan's defence which Kirwan constructed is certainly improving, as is the strength of the team. All the players worked hard to stop Tonga's offence by stepping-forward and shallow out tackling, and maintained the score differential to three points thanks to the well-coordinated defence. This victory will encourage the team in the World Cup three month from now. In the first half, Tonga scored the first try, 3-7. 34 min: Wing Endo picked up the ball kicked by stand-off Ando, and dived in to score a come-from-behind try. Ando added a conversion, 10-7. Japan conceded two tries to Tonga in the second half, but Japan's lock Ono scored a try, and Ando scored a penalty, 20-17. Japan defended against Tonga's fierce offence to the end and earned a long awaited first win in the Pacific Nations Cup. “The fact we won is a big fruit for us,” said captain Miuchi.
