Japan had to face a brutal reality once again: Japan's defence worked on almost-equal opponents like Tonga, but it did not work at all on the much stronger Australia National Rugby Union Team A. Japan played bravely in the first half and had their moments. They even turned the game around to 10-7 at one stage. However, once Australia A was roused, Japan could not withstand their fierce attack. Australia A broke Japan's defence and scored five tries in the first half to seal the win already, 10-36. The second half was also one-sided. Japan conceded five tries and five goals (35 points) and suffered a crushing defeat 10-71. Head coach Kirwan left a forward-looking comment: “we will possibly fight top teams in the World Cup. In those games, all 30 members will play. Although we don't have many games remaining, we still have time.”
