Japan was completely defeated in the first match despite the expectation. Head coach Kirwan decided to use Team A for a match against Fiji, and Team B against Australia and Wales. This was because (1) Japan unfairly had only three days' rest after Australia before Fiji, and (2) they were desperate to win two games at any risk. Results aside, this decision clearly demonstrates the coach's idea to “take the best possible measure to achieve the goal”. Japan's offence unfortunately did not work at all in face of the pressure by Australia. They could not do anything but wait for a disastrous loss to the top contender in the second half. The only way to make up for this disgrace is by beating Fiji.
