Japan's defence has improved amazingly thanks to Kirwan's coaching. Japan's game plan to “keep the defence solid, score penalties, and seize the few opportunities presented to score a try to win” is almost realised. In the 30th minute of the first half, the ball was dropped when Japan attempted a side attack from number 8 Miuchi to scrum-half Yoshida. Flanker Qera showed “Fijian magic” by scooping up the ball quickly. There were times Japan was counterattacked due to mistakes in offence. Japan, trailing four points and aiming to score a try to win , attempted an attack for nearly five minutes in the extra time to the sound of roars and cheers even after two of their scrum-halves Yoshida and Yatomi were replaced due to injury, but they could not accomplish it before the whistle went for no side.
