The wet weather forced many ball handling mistakes on both teams. Japan had the upper hand in the first half and had chances to score a try. It was disappointing that Taira's play in the 32nd minute of the first half, when Japan was leading 9-3, was judged as a “knock-on” for Onozawa. In the 10th minute of the second half, Japan's fullback Webb received a kick and attempted a counter attack but dropped the ball. The ball was picked up by an opponent who ran with it for 50 metres to score a come-from-behind try to the right corner. Japan added a penalty (12-10), but Fiji quickly deployed in the 16th minute and scored a try and a goal. They scored another try to seal the win in the 38th minute. The head coach Kirwan said that “it is more like Japan self-destroyed than Fiji won,” and captain Miuchi said “though it is a small difference, it makes a big difference”, describing everything about the match.
