Head coach Kirwan made a mass change of personnel after the match against Fiji. Japan conceded two tries by the 12th minute of the first half, 3-12. Japan could have started collapsing, but they scored tries in the 24th and 26th minute. They also scored a try from a great vertical attack in the 40th minute to give themselves a 22-17 lead at the break. However, in the 7th minute of the second half, Japan made three mistakes in a row including a knock-on and lost the opportunity to win. They copped a sequence of attacks instead and conceded a come-from-behind try. They also conceded a try after a run without being tackled in the 15th minute to extend NZ's lead to 22-34. Japan's tackling lost its lustre after this. The score in the second half was 0-48. The number of tries was 3-10. Japan lost to NZ Maori.
