One can say it was a big defeat because Samoa doubled Japan's score, 15-34. Samoa is an internationally-renowned strong team. Japan started to expose their fragility once the game was turned around, collapsed and conceded four tries. However, I think they have built up the strength to go neck and neck with Samoa. They have a lot to improve on, including switching from attacking to defending, but they are almost there. “We had at least five chances to score a try in the first half alone!” said head coach John Kirwan. It was disappointing for Japan that Nicholas's try was judged as an offside offence when he jumped onto the ball Webb kicked.
