Japan conceded 6 tries in the first half to make it 0-40 at the break. It is the worst way a game can develop. The game itself wasn't so bad, and they had some chance of scoring a try, too. Japan could have broken down to concede as many as 100 points on their bad day. However, head coach Kirwan's head talk stirred the players. “Play with pride as Japan's national squad. Win the second half at least!” Japan got a chance in the 5th minute of the second half when Imamura made a dash with the ball. The ball was passed to Toyota, then to Kikutani to try a goal. They counterattacked a kick by New Zealand, deployed from a ruck and scored a try in the 17th minute. Again in the 20th minute, they deployed quickly from a ruck in front of the goal, broke the opponent's defence shield, and cut the lead to 21-40 by Taira's try. NZ also scored two tries to seal the win. There was something to be gained from this loss. Kikutani played well as the pillar of defence and offence.
