Japan was off to a lacklustre start today. They might have been feeling heavy-bodied because of fatigue. Their play was not sharp enough and their posture was too upright. In the 2nd minute of the first half, Japan launched an attack but was counterattacked after a knock-on, and allowed Tonga's number 14 Helu to make a dash leaving the rest far behind. In the 5th minute, Nicholas, centring in both attack and defence, had to be replaced due to injury. In the 10th minute of the second half, Japan's forwards made a dash, and Hatayama scored a try, and Arlidge added conversion to turn the game around (14-13). Tonga didn't flinch from this. They counterattacked by picking up the ball Hatayama was about to try, and punted it, which fitted in the arms of number 13 Fatafehi. Fatafehi ran for 60 metres to the goal-line. Tonga also scored a goal and turned the game around once again (16-20). After one penalty each was given to both teams (19-23), Japan kept playing in front of the goal for seven minutes until extra time. They finally pushed in the scrum in the last segment, were awarded a penalty try and won the last minute victory. Kikutani's cool-headed game management led to the victory. He checked the remaining time with the referee and helped the team come from behind with penalty goals. Centre Kanazawa, who did a good job replacing Nicholas for 75 minutes, was also a great contributor.
