In bad conditions with strong wind and rain, Japan lost a close game against youth-based Samoa, whose key players belonging to European clubs were absent. Japan led the first half (10-0) with a penalty by Arlidge and a try by Holani Ryu Koriniasi (and a conversion). However, in the second half, Samoa was awarded two penalties to narrow the gap (10-6). In the 19th minute, with a margin of four points, Japan earned a chance to win. They pushed a maul formed in front of the Samoan goal-line. Kikutani went for his favourite side attack, but pushed out of the touch-line just before the goal. In the 29th minute, Samoa scored a come-from-behind try. Japan had enough players in their defence, but the forwards could not handle Samoa's sharp steps. Although players share roles in modern rugby, I find it very regrettable because there was enough time for the backs to return to their positions.
