Although individual Russian players have substantial power, the forwards could not gain possession, and their defence was torn into pieces. On the other hand, Japan showed a speedy game for which we could say ‘this is Japanese rugby'. Japan's agenda was narrowed down to the following two points: ‘improve accuracy of each play' and ‘to quickly get the ball out of the ruck'. Among the players, flanker Michael Leitch stood out for his high work rate and advanced skills. Fullback Atsushi Tanabe, who picked up his first cap in this game at the age of 32, got difficult goals one after another to save face as the Top League's best kicker. He showed excellent kicking processes and ball handling. Scrum-half Koji Wada, who was selected as a starting player for the first time, also played brilliantly. It proved that Japan was really building its bench strength. In the post-match interview, captain Kikutani said that the team would ‘aim to win three games in the Rugby World Cup'.
