The fact that Japan failed to show a good result in front of the home audience might have awakened them. After entering Fiji, Japan fought against Tonga and Fiji with highly concentrated play. In the 5th minute of the second half of the match against Tonga on 9 July, Japan pushed in a scrum in front of Tonga's goal to get a free kick, then Holani scored a try from a quick attack. After that, even while there was also a scene Tonga achieved come-from-behind points when stand-off James Arlidge's kick was charged down and Japan conceded a try, Arlidge converted all the four tries successfully. Japan won by a narrow margin of one point 28-27. Captain Takashi Kikutani reflected saying, “There is no meaning if the forwards can't run even while we are aiming quickly-moving games.”
