In the first minute of the match, Japan increased phases to septic attack at the beginning. Flanker Michael Leitch broke through vertically and passed the ball to centre Yu Tamura who followed, then he scored the opening try already. “I was not nervous at all. I was going to score my team's first try.” Tamura showed off his strong heart from the start. Players who debuted as a national team member in this match against Kazakhstan were six in all including Tamura. Japan scored the second try in the 13th minute. Eventually Japan scored 13 tries, and the time from the first try to the second was the longest interval with no try. “The first 20 minutes is difficult in any kind of match. The point we need to correct most is slowness of support at breakdown. Approach by the second player is the problem both in attacking and defending. The cause of late support might have been fatigue, but it is also true that all players tried to play holding the ball too much. If you don't think to keep holding the ball, you can enter contact more quickly.” (head coach Jones) They had practiced as a team for only two weeks. Considering the fact that this match against Kazakhstan was their first match, it was understandable that the team still included unorganized aspects.
Still, as head coach Jones credited after the match saying, “They became better in the second half also for breakdowns”, it was also true that the problems clarified in the beginning had been corrected gradually. Not only because Japan simply scored 13 tries, but also because they got the feeling in the match that they would be able to continue evolving their ideal rugby as the “Japan way”, a positive sense of relief was spread among members and coaching staff. “This team is already consolidated.” (head coach Jones)
