In an interview after the match, head coach Jones said “Even though we had difficulties in finishing, I'm satisfied with how we made many opportunities. Their set pieces and defense were both good.”
In the 11th minute of the match, Matsushima, who was selected as the outer centre, responded sharply and flexibly to a shallow forward pass typical of number 10 Tatekawa. He received it successfully while spinning to avoid the hit that Samoa attempted, and went forward smoothly. The ball was passed to full-back Goromaru who came from behind well, and number 14 Fujita, who accomplished his role as a finisher in every match. After that, Matsushima, who was mainly positioned in the back-three, made several gains, and scored a try around the end, which determined the result of the game. He had patience, which could be expressed as a “crazy flexibility” against contacts, even when going through was impossible, therefore he did not fall down easily. If the centre mastered skills in changing the course before grabbing the ball, it must be possible to create a unique attack with the past master of space strategy, Tatekawa.
Japan's problem on the day was penalties. For a while after the start of the second half which started with a score of 20-7, Japan was not able to score, giving penalty kicks even while attacking.
