A test match like this with such a clear reason for victory might be quite rare for Japan. Japan succeeded on the day just by performing overwhelmingly well in scrums.
Just after the start of the second half, which began with a score of 17-17, scrum-half Fumiaki Tanaka grabbed a chance from his kick, which he had self-evaluated as his improved skill in the second season of the Super Rugby, to make a scrum deep inside the opponent's territory. Japan believed that the United States scrums were “not a threat as long as we hold together” (vice captain and hooker Shota Horie), after pressuring them, number 8 Ryu Koliniasi Holani dived under and saved to lead. Also in the 14th minute, Japan pushed in a scrum at the right front of the opponent's goal, and then rushed into the in-goal. After all, Japan's tries in the second half were just two, which they got from these scrums. Head coach Jones was disappointed, saying “Plays by the backs were not good,”, and attacks at a high tempo did not show up until the end.
