In the 4th minute of the match, stand-off Kosei Ono passed the ball to wing Kenki Fukuoka with a perfect kick pass. The expectation increased significantly when Japan approached Uruguay's goal leading to actual scores and brought much pleasure in the 12th minute of the first half. With a chance made by the forwards, including flanker Michael Broadhurst's breakthrough, the backs moved to the right to score the opening points.
In the following 15th minute, number 8 Hendrik Tui and wing Kotaro Matsushima got a big gain, then stand-off Ono pressed down in Uruguay's in-goal.
Also in the 25th minute, due to good running by wing Fukuoka, flanker Broadhurst scored a try, and full-back Goromaru scored three goals perfectly. The score in the first half was 21-0.
In the second half, Japan increased their tempo even more, and in the 4th minute, wing Matsushima, 10th minute, number 8 Tui, and 26th minute, wing Fukuoka, all scored three tries in all to make the final score 40-0. It can be said that the defense didn't show any gaps at all. Even while members changed and Japan conceded three penalties consecutively around the end, head coach Jones didn't mind saying “It is just like tossing a coin”. Japan “won over” (head coach) set plays. It was an easy win that was hard to fault, from the excellent stability of kicking by full-back Goromaru who scored several goals to their approach to consecutive difficult goals.
