The fact that the preparation period was not enough might have been influential. At the beginning, playing againt Canada who displayed their physical prowess as usual, Japan allowed them to go forward without being patient and conceded two tries (in the 6th and 20 minutes). “They came near the forwards; it made us passive.” (lock Kazuhiko Usami) In the 10th minute, Japan scored a penalty goal back. This was made by stand-off Tamura and captain and centre Harumichi Tatekawa going forward violently, as if they inspired the young forwards who didn't have World Cup members except the first row, to induce Canada's penalty. In the 22nd minute, the inspired forwards scored a try in a maul, and also added points with a penalty goal just before the first half ended. They managed to achieve a one-point lead, and then the half-time break came.
In the 5th minute of the second half, Canada pushed in a scrum, then their forwards scored a try to come from behind. In the 13th minute, Yoshiya Hosoda, who was at his first cap, was sent to the sin-bin (red card) due to a dangerous play in a ruck which attacked deep inside the opponent's territory. Just after Japan losing him to have only 14 members, Canada kept the ball in longer, however, also being helped by Canada's poor attack by missing penalty goals consecutively, Japan regained their own pace, and in the 29th minute, full-back Kotaro Matsushima jumped out and scored a try to come from behind.
Beside Canada who missed place-kicks five times in all, with additional points by the right foot of Tamura who scored 2 goals aind 4 penalty goals perfectly, Japan had a 9-point lead 5 minutes before the game ended. Even while Canada scored a try back in the 39th minute of the second half, and also attacked in Japan's in-goal from the kick-off from it, Japan managed to defend until the end to win 26-22.
