Japan lost completely in physical battles, such as scrums which Head coach Jamie Joseph also admitted were “currently the strongest in the world”. In the 9th minute of the first half, Kotaro Matsushima scored the opening try. In the 17th minute, stand-off Yu Tamura scored a penalty goal. However, after all the rest time in the first 40 minutes, Japan had to have a hard fight without being able to get out of their own territory. Yet, unlike two years ago, they were able to avoid being “scrapped in the first half.” In the 26th minute in a maul, and also around the end of the first half by the opponent's scrum-half who picked the ball up and rebounded from a lineout and ran, Japan conceded two tries, however, their score at the end of the first half was 4 points behind the opposition (8-12). Considering lock Kajikawa had been sent to the sin-bin, it could be said that the defense fought patiently. “Improvement was seen in the defense. Also, mistakes by Georgia occured because our defense pressurised them.” (head coach Joseph) The defense that was frayed by the powerful and skillful attack by Argentina was improved somewhat within a week. It was also lucky that Georgia themselves did not stick to the forwards that much, saying “to challenge the world top 10 (Georgia was 11th and Japan was 12th in the world ranking), we should not depend on just big players.” (head coach Milton Haig). Even though Georgia moved the ball around better than ever, their attack itself was simple and did not break Japan's defense system.
In the second half, in the 4th minute, wing Lemeki Lomano Lava intercepted the opposing pass and ran about 80 meters alone. In the 10th minute, Japan conceded the third try on the day to Georgia to come from behind, however, since around then, Georgia's footwork stopped. “We knew that the opponent would be tired when we kept being patient,” reflected flanker Shunsuke Nunomaki after the match, who “was able to play as usual” even while today was his first cap.
Starting with the opening try by full-back Matsushima who chased his own kick, in the 19th minute of the second half, wing Lemeki got the ball even while fumbling the grubber kick by captain Tatekawa, threw off the opponent's defense and caught up again, which led to the come-from-behind try by wing Kenki Fukuoka in the 23th minute of the second half.
“I think Georgia was tired after attacking and attacking in the first half. I'm grateful I could play during that time period (subbed in in the 11th minute of the second half)” (Fukuoka) After getting the ball by reacting to the movement of stand-off Tamura who went forward after finding the opponent defense frayed, Fukuoka racked the opponent's backs, jumped in the left corner, and killed Georgia. “The opponent was tired, and I used kicks well,” stand-off Tamura displayed calm game making, and in the 34th minute, scored a penalty goal to make the final score 28-22.
