These two wins Japan got by using their Japan-like style, without losing in contact against Italy and Georgia, who had the world's strongest physical power, could be said to be evidence that the team were evolving. As head coach Jamie Joseph and the players said, they realized that the experience of difficult games they had had in Sunwolves backed up Japan's growth. All of the three stadiums the games were held at were going to be venues for the Rugby World Cup next year. Also in terms of raising the momentum at the venues, it was a meaningful season.
The comment by head coach Jamie Joseph in a summary interview on 27 June about the Lipovitan D Challenge Cup 2018 was: “It was an excellent series in June. I think we were able to show our rugby brand in the match against Italy. The players played with confidence until the end. They showed their wonderful skills of making good decisions and scoring tries in a test match of world level. Also, we won the match against Georgia with no point loss. Japan had such an experience for the first time that they gave no point against the opponent who was 12th in the world ranking. It was a very special match for the team too. I think we were able to show our improvement. I also feel they are stating to have characters required as a team for the Rugby World Cup 2019. I'm proud of my players. Also, they showed improvement in leadership too. We have developed our leadership skill too for these 18 months while changing captains. Japan's captain changed from Haru (Harumichi Tatekawa) and Shota (Shota Horie) to Leitch (Michael Leitch), and they two supported the new captaion surely. In this series, Nagare (Yutaka Nagare) showed an excellent captaincy as proved in Suntory Sungoliath or HITO-Communications Sunwolves. Support by (Fumiaki) Tanaka was also great.”
