The primary theory in order to prevail the world cup is to win the first match. The Japan national team players said: “We feel pressure. The point is how to cope with it.” The stadium filled with spectators as well as total excitement as the opening ceremony ended.
Russia kicked off the match. Japan's captain, Michael Leitch, failed to catch the ball, when it went into touch. Russia quickly came deep into Japan's territory. Japan managed to get out of this jam. But in the 4th minute when an opponent FB kicked back, FB Tupou misjudged the point where the ball landed and dropped it. Russian TWB Kirill Golosnitskiy swiftly approached and got the ball, finishing by diving into the in-goal area which brought the first score to the Bears. The Brave Blossoms clearly looked stiff. In the 11th minute, Japan started to attack from the lineout in front of the goal line. FB Tupou got the ball on a no-look offload by CTB Lafaele, when WTB Kotaro Matsushima ran fast and made a try (conversion failed). Japan appeared to get a grip but continued to show unstable performance, such as fumbling a kick-off ball. SO Tamura's kick also lacked accuracy. Russia's kicks were more accurate and secure. Japan also had several attacking chances, but Russian powerful defenders blocked Japanese forwards who lost control. It was a frustrating phase to Japan. In the 38th minute of the first half, Japan patiently went through several phases. Finally, receiving an offload from CTB Nakamura, Matsushima ran into the center of the in-goal area. Tamura also scored successfully, as the first half ended with a score of 12-7.
In the second half, Japan regained their concentration. In the 3rd minute, Tamura made a successful PG. In the 6th minute, Labuschagne snatched the ball from a Russian LO and ran 50m making a try. The score was 20-7. Matsushima made his third try in the 28th minute, and Matsuda replaced with Tamura made a successful conversion to make the score 30-10.
In the end, Japan allowed Russia to make only a single try made in the first half, winning this match and gaining bonus points. This is certainly what the world cup is all about. This victory fell far short of a crushing victory, but the value of this match was in outrunning Russia who was fully prepared to take on a challenge. Matsushima was named as the man of the match after turning in a hat trick with three tries just as he told before the world cup that he would be the first-ever Japanese player to make a hat trick in the world cup.
