First Entry Fee Collected at the 3rd Waseda-Keio Rivalry

The third Waseda-Keio rivalry was the first rugby match in Japan where attendance was charged for. The amateur spirit was personified in rugby at that time; therefore, the entry fee issue proposed by Waseda caused a heated debate. The related parties thoroughly discussed this issue for one year, coming to the conclusion of approving entry fee collection under the following conditions: (1) The number of spectators is restricted in order to avoid overcrowding. (2) Games are mainly sponsored by Japan East Rugby Football Union. (3) The balance after deduction for overhead costs are divided between both universities and the union.
After the fifth Waseda-Keio rivalry held on 23 November 1926, the major matches of the Kanto University League were charged and held at the Jingu Gaien Stadium. Stand seats cost 1 Japanese yen, while general admission to the ordinary glass areas cost 0.5 Japanese yen.
