Waseda Toured Australia

The first captain of Waseda in the Showa era, Shinjiro Honryo, visited a rugby-advanced nation with the aim at conquering Keio, while eagerly desiring to experience real rugby. His passion moved him to recklessly achieve a tour to Australia with help from his sympathizers.
Afterward, Waseda beat Keio for the first time, forming the team that was considered in-vincible around 1935 based on their tactics acquired through the Australian tour.
Although completely defeated in all five games in Australia, Waseda put up a great battle against strong opponents. On their way back to Japan, they played three games in Manila and Hong Kong, a total of eight matches throughout the entire tour. The tour members included Professor Soichiro Kita who led the team, along with 18 players under the head coach Bunichi Kimura. Leaving Japan on July 13, they arrived in Japan on September 23 where an autumn wind started to blow. This major tour took 73 days.
