In “The History of Kansai Rugby”, the section entitled “Construction of an Ideal Stadium” contains the following descriptions. “The construction of the new stadium was started by Shimizu Corporation in March 1929 with 500,000 Japanese yen as the construction budget. The stadium was rushed and completed in October the same year. On December 21, the stadium opening ceremony was held at the All-Japan Old Boys Invitational Tournaments. Prince Chichibu, who was going to marry in the autumn of that same year, visited this championship with Crown Princess, his future wife, thanking the related parties for their services. On this day, this rugby stadium was officially named ‘Hanazono Rugby Stadium Exclusively Managed by JRFU and Seibu Rugby Football Union'.”
The completion of the first rugby stadium in Japan made immeasurable contributions to development of Japanese rugby. As the rugby mecca in the Kansai area, Hanazono Rugby Stadium has been loved by many rugby fans through a great number of international and major rugby games that have been held there. “Hanazono”, the venue where the National High School Rugby Tournament is held, is the home and the mecca for high-school ruggers, serving as synonymous for high-school rugby.
