Postwar Rebuilding and the First Matches in the Kansai and Kanto Areas

After the war, rugby underwent a quick recovery. In Kansai, one day in the beginning of September immediately after the war ended, Torao Shono, a graduate of the University of Tokyo, and Tsunazo Nishino, a graduate of Waseda, met Toshio Taniguchi, Jiro Inoue, Takenosuke Okumura, Yasujiro Bessho, Akira Sugimoto, and Seiji Hojo to arrange to restore the Kansai rugby football club and to have a match with Daisan High School. This took place at the Kyoto University ground as a restoration match for the first time after the war.
“Result: Kansai rugby football club 24-6 Daisan High School; Players appeared (Note: The university names in the parentheses indicate their old schools) - FW: Yasuyuki Kamahara (Kansai), Goichiro Kuriyama (Doshisha), Yasuo Murata (Medical School of Nihon Univ.), Yasue Ito (Kyoto), Torao Shono (Tokyo), Toshio Taniguchi (Kyoto), and Seiji Hojo (Kansai Gakuin); HB: Yasuero Horiba (Doshisha), Ichiro Nogami (Waseda), and Tosaburo Hayashi (Waseda); TB: Suguru Naito (Doshisha), Akira Sugimoto (Keio), Kazuo Nakanishi (Keio), and Shoji Sakaguchi (Waseda); FB: Yoshiharu Tao (Keio)” (Source: “The History of Rugby in Kansai”)
According to “The History of Football at Daisan High School”, Kamahara switched with Onohara, Abe (Waseda) took the loose head prop (No. 1), Hayashi (No. 8) took the central position, and Sugimoto refereed the match. I believe that the account in “The History of Football at Daisan High School” reprinted from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper is more accurate than the memory of Shono. “All Daisan High School players - FW: Shimizu (Kyoto), Shimomura (Kyoto), Yamashita, Sasai (Kyoto), Umemura, Takahara (Tokyo), Hamada (Tokyo), and Okada (Tokyo); HB: Kametani (Kyoto), and Tamura (Kyoto); TB: Nakamura, Koizumi (Kyoto), Morimoto, and Iwanami; FB: Ogata (Kyoto)” (Source: “The History of Football at Daisan High School”)
In Kanto on November 2, Chuji Kitajima, the head coach of Meiji University brought together members at random, holding intrasquad matches at the Seijo's ground for students and graduated players.
