Within these 10 years, Waseda became the champion university in Japan seven times. They set fantastic records, such as 3 wins in the Japan Rugby Championship, 7 wins in the All-Japan University Rugby Championship, 8 wins in the Kanto University Rugby Tournaments, 35 consecutive wins in official matches, and 60 straight wins in the inter-university rugby tournaments. They performed incredibly achieving the best record within this 10-year period.
In the inter-university rugby tournaments, Waseda was defeated only twice by an emerging team, Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU). In the All-Japan University Rugby Championship, they lost three games to NSSU, Hosei, and Meiji. In total, Waseda lost only these five games during these 10 years. Waseda also performed solidly in six matches within the Japan Rugby Championship with a record of 3-3. Waseda actually won the All-Japan University Rugby Championship seven times, but Keio advanced to the Japan Rugby Championship once by lot when Waseda and Keio shared the title.
Waseda's winning rate during these 10 years was 93.2% with a record of 109 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses. This was such an incredible record. This record includes a record of 3-3 in the Japan Rugby Championship. Among the records of matches against other universities without including matches against company teams, this means that Waseda's winning rate is 95.5% with a record of 106 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses.
What actually brought about such an outstanding performance? Through my wonderful experience of directing this team as the blessed head coach, I consider the following as the main factors that led to their success:
1. Completion of the concentrated offense theory
2. Establishment of the organized defensive measures
3. Enhancement of team members
4. Success in the group relay coaching system
5. Efforts made together with current players and graduates to achieve the team's goals
In these 10 years, group relay coaching worked quite well. The head coach is selected from the coaching staff members in principle, with a year period of coaching given. Even though the subsequent head coach takes over, the former head coach assists him to continue to work on strengthening the team. To have younger Old Boys join in supporting their school rugby team besides their regular job, we cannot make any unreasonable demand that could cause their work to suffer. On the other hand, hiring staff members who would have little daily contact with students could lose consistency in coaching, resulting in confusion. Therefore, I had to use the above-mentioned factors in order to reinforce our rugby team while cherishing the spirit of amateurism.
