Cold and rough. We passed the meridian a little after noon today - quite sick.

We gained a day and this is the second Wednesday in the week. A fine weather but the engine broke down about six o’clock in the morning and we stood still for half a day. A peculiar swell of the ship made me very sick. So were other passengers. A little after noon the engine began to move again and the ship become more steady then we felt much better. This was the only really fine day since we left Yokohama.

寒く、荒れた天気。正午を少し過ぎた頃に日付変更線［？］を通過した。かなり船酔いしている。

日付が1日遅れるため、今週2回目の水曜日だ。良い天気だが、午前6時ごろに船のエンジンが壊れ、半日くらい立往生した。

船が大きく上下に妙な揺れ方をして、非常に気分が悪くなった。他の乗船客も同様だった。午後を少し過ぎた頃にエンジンが再び動き出し、船体も安定したため、私たちの気分もかなり改善した。横浜を出てからの唯一の、非常に天気の良い一日だった。
