The subject of discussion for the day was “Education in relation to the Christianization of National life.” Dr. Gore made a very good speech on the Report.
In the morning India and Africa was considered chiefly the former. In the afternoon China and Japan had their turn. There is a wide spread interest in China far more than Japan. I spoke emphasizing the need of strengthening the present schools and college and also of having a Christian university worthy of the name.
There is a consensus of opinion regarding the supreme importance of the educational work and of strengthening and coordinating the present institutions. This certainly is an indication of deeper insight into the real work of evangelization, quite different from the time when “the Evangelization of the world in this generation” was the watch word.
In the evening the mission work of German, Dutch and French churches received attention. I went in but I could not understand the German speaker, so I came home and prepared for my address on Saturday night.
本日の議題は「国民生活のキリスト教化に関する教育」だった。ドクター・ゴアが同主題の報告書についてとても良い演説をした。
午前中はインドとアフリカについてで、取り分けインドに関して中心的に検討された。午後は中国と日本の番だった。中国に対しては、日本に対してよりずっと広範な関心が寄せられている。私は現存する学校や大学の強化、および名実伴ったキリスト教大学を持つことの必要性を強調して演説した。
教育事業および現存する機関の強化や調整が非常に重要であることに関しては、皆意見が一致していた。これは確実に真の福音伝道へのより深い洞察の表れであり、「今世代のうちに全世界に福音を伝える」が標語になっていた時とはかなり変わってきている。
夜はドイツ、オランダ、そしてフランスの教会による伝道の取り組みに関心が集まった。私も会場に入ったが、ドイツ人の演説者の言葉が聞き取れなかったので、滞在先に戻って土曜日の夜に予定されている自分の演説の準備をした。
