“The missionary message in relation to non-Christian religions” was the subject for the day’s discussion.
The Animistic religions, the Religions of China, & Japan, and Islam were discussed in turn. The discussion was quite interesting. In the afternoon Hinduism was discussed. Rather wide difference of opinion was discovered as to the attitude to be taken toward it.
Mr. Speer summed up the discussion. I intended to speak a word of Testimony but there was no time. Yesterday, the Chairman said, there were 42 men who wished to speak, yet had no chance given them.
In the evening I spoke in the “Tolbooth Church” the church of Scotland Assebmly Hall. The Hall was quite full, about 1000 people were present. I had to read my notes, that was a great drawback, but I had to. Mr. Miller of Sendai spoke, but his voice was so weak that he was not heard by half the audience I feared. Good many left while he spoke. Bishop Harris and Dr. Jones of Korea spoke. Their voices filled the Hall.
本日の議題は、「キリスト教以外の諸宗教との関わりにおける宣教の内容」だった。
アニミズム的な宗教、中国や日本の宗教、そしてイスラム教について、順番に議論された。かなり興味深い内容だった。午後はヒンドゥー教について議論が行われた。この宗教にどのように向き合うべきかというそれぞれの意見については、大きな相違があることが分かった。
ミスター・スピアが議論をまとめた。私は一言、神を証言しようと考えていたが、時間がなかった。昨日はスピーチをしたいという人が42名いたが、機会を作ることができなかった、と議長が言っていた。
夜には、スコットランド教会の集会場である「トールブース・チャーチ」で演説した。会場は満員で、聴衆は1000人程度いた。私は原稿を読まなければならなかった。決して好ましいことではなかったが、やむを得なかった。仙台のミスター・ミラーも演説したが、声が弱々し過ぎて聴衆の半分には聞こえていないのではないかと心配してしまった。彼が話している間に結構な人数が会場を離れた。韓国のハリス監督とドクター・ジョーンズも演説した。彼らの声は会場に響き渡っていた。
