All the guests entertained by Sir Alex. Simpson during the Conference, i. e. Dr. George Alexander, the Eddies, the Fishers, and also Mr. & Mrs. Alexander departed after prayer and singing “God be with you till we meet again.”
I called on Mr. Severance at North British Hotel. I asked to hold his offer open to the end of this year, and at last he consented to give $5,000 for a New［判読不能］ Hall, but he will give $ 4,000 on two conditions, namely that I should raise the rest of the sum required “within a reasonable time” and also that “all the Japanese teachers be Christian.” The latter condition would be rather difficult to meet at once for obvious reasons, we can not turn out the men who served the school so faithfully during the past years. The better way would be to convert them if possible.
On my way I called on Tsuru but he was out. I wrote him a note giving him a letter of introduction to Prof. Martin. I want him to prepare for teaching the O. T. in our school.
Left Edinburgh by 4 o’clock train from the Waverly Station, and came Waverly［sic］ Station in Glasgow. It was evening. Honda came after 11 o’clock.
祈祷をして、讃美歌God be with you till we meet againを歌った後、ドクター・ジョージ・アレクサンダー、エディ一家、フィッシャー一家、そしてアレクサンダー夫妻など、大会中にアレックス・シンプソン卿によるもてなしを受けていた賓客は全員旅立った。
ミスター・セベレンスを訪ねてノース・ブリティッシュ・ホテルに行った。彼の申し出を年末まで延長してもらえるようお願いしたところ、最終的に5000ドルを新しい［判読不能］ホールの建設のために献金することを承諾してくれたが、そのうち4000ドルは、私が残りの必要額を「妥当な期間内に」集めること、そして「すべての日本人教員がキリスト教徒であること」という2つの条件を満たさないと献金しないとのことだった。後者の条件については、ここ何年も学院に誠実に尽くしてくれた人たちを追い出すわけにはいかないという明確な理由から、すぐに満たすのはかなり難しい。可能であれば改宗してもらうという方が得策だろう。
途中で都留を訪れたが、外出していたので、マーティン教授への紹介状とメモを残しておいた。彼には私たちの学院で旧約聖書を教える準備をして欲しいと考えている。
ウェイヴァリー駅4時発の列車でエディンバラを離れ、グラスゴーの［セントラル？］駅まで移動した。到着したのは夕方だった。11時過ぎに本多が来た。
