Went to Ocean Grove taking 9 a. m. train from Jersey City. Honda met me at the station. We waited for Dr. Goucher at his hotel and when he came I had a very good talk with him on the subject of higher Christian education in Japan. He told us that he was appointed the chairman on the Japan, China Korea section of the committee on Educational work. He is deeply interested in the movement, in fact he is enthusiastic over it. He has marked out his plan for the union college. He expressed himself in favor of an informal conference sometime between July 22 and Aug. 18. He also suggested that Dr. A. J. Brown should call the conference. He invited us to luncheon and insisted also to paying my railway fare. Returned to New York in time for supper. There were crowd of people at Asbury Park. It is a pretty seaside place.
ジャージー・シティから9時の電車に乗ってオーシャン・グローブへ行く。ホンダが駅まで迎えに来てくれた。ガウチャ博士が滞在しているホテルで彼を待つ。彼とは、日本におけるより高等キリスト教教育というテーマについて、有意義な意見交換をすることができた。彼は教育を管轄する委員会の、日本・中国・韓国地域の責任者に指名されたのだそうだ。彼はこの活動に大いに興味があるどころか、非常な情熱を抱いていた。彼は総合的な大学設立のために自身が描いている計画を示してくれた。彼は、7月22日から8月18日の間に非公式な会合を開くべきだと述べた。そして、A・J・ブラウン博士が会合を招集すべきだとも言った。彼は我々を昼食に招待してくれたばかりか、私の電車賃を支払うと言ってきかなかった。夕食に間に合う時間にニューヨークに戻る。アズベリー・パークに人が大勢いた。海辺の美しい町だ。
