July 7th, Thursday
Wrote several letters, one to home. Wrote to Dr. Brown as Dr. Goucher suggested. Then a letter came from Dr. Fulton saying that he has already arranged for a conference next Monday afternoon at 2.30 at the Pres. Building. So I had to write to Dr. Brown again after it. Wrote to Dr. Goucher too.
I was asked to speak a few words at the meeting of the board of managers of the American Bible Society. And I did so. There were present ten members besides the president, secretary and the treasurer. They were all old men between 70 and 80. Each member seemed to be as venerable as the society itself.
Stopped at the Pres. Building on my way back but Dr. Fulton was not there. Met for a moment Dr. Houley.
In the evening Bishop Honda and Mr. and Mrs. Sato, the Methodist preacher and his wife called and we had a rather enjoyable time.
It was very close and hot this afternoon but now as I am writing 11 p.m. it began to rain. It is a good rain.
手紙を何通か書く。自宅にも一通書く。ガウチャ博士の提案に従い、ブラウン博士にも書いた。するとフルトン博士から手紙が来て、すでに土曜の午後2時30分に長老派教会ビルでの会合をアレンジしたと言う。そこでブラウン博士に再び手紙を書くはめになった。ガウチャ博士にも書いた。米国聖書協会の幹部会で少し話をして欲しいと頼まれた。引き受ける。議長、書記、会計係とは別に10名のメンバーがいた。みな70歳から80歳の間の高齢男性だった。どのメンバーも、協会自体と同様、尊敬すべき人たちのようにみえた。
帰路、長老派教会ビルに立ち寄ったがフルトン博士は不在だった。ハウリー博士と短時間だが顔を合わせた。
夜、ホンダ監督、メソジストの牧師のミスター・サトウ夫妻が来訪、楽しい時間を少々過ごす。
午後は蒸し暑かったが、これを書いている午後11時の今、雨が降り始めた。よき雨だ。
