In the afternoon went to the N.Y. Central ticket office at 125th St. and bought a single ticket to Chicago, and checked my baggage to San Francisco. Every thing is now ready for leaving the city. I spent just about a month in New York from July 3 to August 5, the hottest part of the year.
For the supper Mrs. Ohori made “Gomokuzushi” specially for my sobetsukai. She is a fair cook, though she could improve very much. She follows too blindly the “Kuidoraku” and other Japanese cooking books. I suggested to her to use more of the American vegetables.
午後、125丁目のN. Y. セントラル駅の切符売り場に行き、シカゴ行きの片道切符を買い、サンフランシスコ行きの荷物を預ける。これで、出発の準備はすべて整った。7月3日から8月5日まで、ほぼ一ヵ月ニューヨークにいたことになる。一年で最も暑い時期だった。
夕食は、オオホリ夫人が私の送別会として特別に「五目ずし」を作ってくれた。彼女は料理が上手だが、もっと上手くなる余地がある。「食道楽」やその他日本の料理本を鵜呑みにしすぎている。彼女に、もっとアメリカの野菜を使ってはどうかと伝えた。
