Took the Empire State Express from the Grand Central at 8:30am. Ohori and his wife came with me to the station to see me off. I enjoyed staying with them and they seemed reluctant to let me leave them. I do not wonder that Mrs. Ohori feels lonely. I admired her to find friends among the American and Japanese ladies living in this neighborhood so that when she is alone and lonely she could call on them.
The train reached Buffalo punctually at 5:15pm. Leaving one of my suitcases and hat case I took the elmwood car and got off at Birds Avenue. Miss Abbie Telford and her sister Miss ［判読不能］ welcomed me to their home. I remember the houses but this neighborhood has changed. Many houses have gone ［判読不能］.
午前8時30分グランド・セントラル駅発のエンパイア・ステート・エクスプレスに乗る。オオホリと夫人が見送りに一緒に駅まで来てくれた。彼らとの滞在は楽しかったし、彼らもまた私が去るのが名残惜しいようだ。オオホリ夫人が寂しくなってしまうことはないだろう。私は彼女が、アメリカ人か日本人かにかかわらず、近所に住む女性たちと友だちになってしまう姿に尊敬の念を抱いてきた。一人でいるときに寂しくなったら、彼女たちに電話すれば良い。
列車は予定通り午後5時15分にバッファローに到着した。スーツケースと帽子箱を残したまま、エルムウッド路面電車に乗り、バーズ・アベニューで下車する。ミス・アビー・テルフォードと、姉妹のミス・［判読不能］が家に迎え入れてくれた。家には見覚えがあるが、近隣の様子は変わってしまった。多くの家はなくなってしまったようだ。
