Went to the office of the Chicago and North Western R.R. Company and secured R.Way ticket to San Francisco and also a ticket for a berth. Then took the elevated car to the Chicago University. As I reached the university ground, a Japanese student came up to me and introduced himself as Kato Katsuji. He said he has been a student in Tokyo Gakuin and heard me speak. He showed me through some of the buildings. They are all good aged and substantial but somehow incomplete or unfinished.
Called on Prof. Star’s office but he was out. Left my card. Waited at Prof. Burton’s office till he finished his lecture. He took me to the club and I had a good talk with him on the general situation of Christian education in Japan.
I asked his candid opinion, as an outsider, in regard to the need to meet this present crisis. He thought a union college of high standard supported by different denominations was a great ［判読不能］. In fact his ideas agreed pretty much with my own. I showed a report of a conference in N.Y. and also gave him copies of my address on high Christian education.
He said he will gladly use his influences in prosecuting the course.
I asked him whether he could speak positively as to the result of his investigation in Japan.
He said I had better act as though he never visited Japan. So it is placed we can expect nothing from that direction.
I then asked him whether scholarships of which he spoke in Japan should be available when this union college is established. He thought it was possible but of course could not say anything definite, but he took note and promised to let me know after consulting to the President.
We met the President as we were going over to the club, and he introduced me to him.
At the club we were having our lunch. Prof. Adams Brown of ［判読不能］ came in and I was introduced to him. He sat at our table and we had a pleasant talk. He is still a young man. He struck me rather as heavy. He was kind and came out of his way to show me my car to the hotel.
On my way back to the hotel the parade of the Masonic brotherhood in uniforms and carrying banners, playing brass bands still going on, and the streets were blocked and I had great difficulty coming through. I suppose they need such toys. They are crazy over them. I struck the city at a very bad time. All these made me feel like to get away from the place as quickly as possible.
シカゴ＆ノース・ウェスタン鉄道の切符売り場に行き、サンフランシスコ行きの切符と、寝台の切符も買った。その後高架鉄道に乗ってシカゴ大学に行く。大学の敷地に差しかかると、一人の日本人学生が近づいてきて、カトウ・カツジと自己紹介をした。以前は東京学院の学生で、私の講話を聴いたことがあるという。彼は建物のいくつかを案内してくれた。どれもがっしりした良い建物だが、どこか不完全で未完成な感じがあった。
スター教授の部屋を訪ねるが不在だった。名刺を残しておく。バートン教授の部屋で、彼の授業が終わるまで待った。彼は私を行きつけのクラブに連れて行き、日本におけるキリスト教教育の全般的な状況について、色々な話をした。
私は彼に、現在の危機に対応するにはどうすれば良いと思うか、部外者としての率直な意見を求めた。異なる宗派が協力して高水準の大学を作るのが良いだろうとの意見だった。実は彼の意見は私とほぼ同じだった。私はN. Y. での会合の記録を見せ、さらにキリスト教の高等教育に関する私の演説の写しを彼に渡した。彼は、この考えを実行に移すために、喜んで自分の影響力を使おうと言ってくれた。私は、日本の調査結果について前向きな話をしてもらえるだろうかと訊いた。
彼は、自分が日本に一度も行ったことがない風にあなたはふるまった方が良い、と言った。つまり、その方面からは何も期待できないということだ。
私はそれから、彼の言う日本における奨学金制度は、このユニオン大学が設立された際には設置されるのかと訊いた。彼はそれは可能だろう、しかし断言することはできないと言ったが、学長に訊いて回答内容を知らせると約束してくれた。
学長とはクラブに行く途中に出会っており、彼が引き合わせてくれた。
クラブで昼食をとっている最中に［判読不能］のアダムス・ブラウン教授が入ってきて、引き合わされる。彼は我々のテーブルに座り、楽しく会話をした。まだ若い男性だ。私にはがっしりとした体格に見える。彼は親切な人で、ホテルに戻る車までわざわざ私を案内してくれた。
ホテルに戻る道中、制服を来たフリーメーソンの集団が旗を振ったり、ブラスバンド演奏をしたりしながらパレード中で、道路が封鎖されていたため、通り抜けるのに大変難儀をした。彼らにはこうした小道具が必要なのだろう。そういうものに夢中なのだ。私は非常に悪い時期にこの街に来てしまったようだ。これらすべてによって一刻も早くこの場所から出たいという気分になってしまう。
