August 13th, Saturday
Arrived here at San Francisco on time. Mr. Terasawa came out to the ferry to meet me. Two Japanese young men also were at the station and helped me carry my suitcases. Mr. Terasawa kindly invited me to stay with him instead of the Misawa building at ［Haigt?］ because that was now out of the way and very inconvenient. I accepted his invitation and came to his house［判読不能］ of which is now used as their meeting place.
Kiminuma called in the evening. He is doing well.
Thursday and Friday: there was nothing special to put down. Rather hot during the day and cold at night.
This morning Mr. Terasawa took me to call on Dr. Stanger. He was out but Mrs. Stanger was in. They have not changed at all since I saw them last four years ago.
We went with them to the office of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and got my ticket for Tenyomaru. Went to Emporium and bought a sheet of blanket and a half dozen collars.
The baggage came all right. A wrong address was given by mistake and there was some delay in getting it. But it came all right at last. Mr. Nakamura invited me and Mr. Terasawa to a Chinese supper. While we were there I picked up an evening paper and was surprised to find in it a cablegram from Tokyo about a fearful flood in Tokyo. Fukagawa and Honjo ku seem to be entirely submerged. Four or five hundred people are said to be drowned and thousands are homeless.
In the evening they had sobetsukai for one of the church members and his wife who are going home and a kangeikai for me.
サンフランシスコには定刻通り到着した。ミスター・テラサワが船着き場まで迎えに来てくれた。2人の若い日本男性も駅に来ており、スーツケースを運ぶのを手伝ってくれた。ヘイトにあるミサワビルは今や人通りがなくとても不便なため、ミスター・テラサワは親切にも自分の家に泊まるよう勧めてくれた。私は彼の招待を受けることにし、現在は集会場所にもなっている［判読不能］彼の家にやってきた。
夜、キミヌマより連絡あり。元気にやっていた。
木曜日と金曜日：特筆すべきことなし。日中はかなり暑く、夜は寒かった。
今日の午前中、テラサワがスタンガー博士のところへ連れて行ってくれた。彼は外出中だったが、スタンガー夫人は在宅だった。4年前、最後に会った時から全く変わっていなかった。
彼らとともにパシフィック・メール・スティームシップ会社の切符売り場に行き、天洋丸の切符を手に入れる。エンポリウム百貨店に行き、毛布を一枚と［交換用の］襟を6つ購入した。
荷物が無事届いた。手違いで誤った住所が表記され、届くのが遅れたが、ようやく届いたというわけだ。ミスター・ナカムラが私とミスター・テラサワを中国料理の夕食に招いてくれた。店の中で夕刊を手に取ると、東京で恐ろしい洪水があったという海底電信経由の記事が載っていて驚いた。深川区や本所区は完全に浸水してしまったらしい。400人から500人が溺死し、何千人もの人々が家を失ったそうだ。
夜、日本に帰国する教会メンバーと彼の妻のための送別会と、私のための歓迎会が開かれた。
