Got up early in the morning and enjoyed bath. It is cloudy in the morning, looks like rain. In coming back to the cabin I found three letters lying on the desk. One of them was from Hana which was forwarded from New York. Another was from Mr. Gamble saying that he has sent order to his office to pay $3,000 to Mr. Day, the treasurer of the Presbyterian Board.
Baron Oura invited me to a Japanese dinner in his state room. There were his two secretaries, Sakai and Hori, and Mr. Takaku also was invited. And it was really a good Japanese dinner. We had sashimi, shioyaki of smelts, which was something like ayu. Umani and satsumajiru, and then beautiful Californian fruits.
He talked freely about his observations in Europe and America. When I asked him what he admired most in their cultures he replied “the roads,” the fine roads.
Had nice chat with the captain, and afterward with the chief mate.
The sea is perfectly calm and it is much warmer in the afternoon.
Mr. Sugimura came to see me and told me that the young members of the church do not like their pastor, there is constant trouble between them. He asked me to find someone for the position.
早起きして風呂を楽しんだ。朝のうちは雲が多く、雨が降りそうだ。客室に戻ると、デスクに手紙が3通置かれていた。そのひとつは花からで、ニューヨークから転送されてきたものだった。もう一通はミスター・ギャンブルからで、長老派役員会の会計担当ミスター・デイ宛に3,000ドルを支払うよう、事務所に指示を出したと書かれていた。
大浦男爵より、彼の個室での日本食ディナーに招待される。そこにはお付きのサカイとホリとともに、ミスター・タカクも招待されていた。とても素晴らしい日本食の夕食だった。刺身、アユに似た魚スメルトの塩焼き。旨煮に薩摩汁、そして美しいカリフォルニアの果物類。
彼はヨーロッパとアメリカに関する見解を気ままに話した。私が彼らの文化の何を最も尊敬しているか尋ねると、彼は「道路」、すぐれた道路だと答えた。
船長、そして後に一等航海士とも話をした。
海は完全に無風で、午後はずっと暖かくなった。
ミスター・スギムラが私のところへやってきて言うには、教会の若いメンバーたちが牧師とうまくいっておらず、両者の間で頻繁に諍いがあるとのこと。誰か別の人物と交代させてほしいと頼まれた。
