Took 12.30 A.M. train from New York and arrived at Washington 7.12. After having breakfast at the station I went to the Embassy about 8 o'clock but the clerk was still in bed and would not come out. I sent up the telegram from the Ambassador

and then he hurriedly came down and excused himself. Later on Mr. Hanihara came and advised me to call on the Ambassador which I did. He received me kindly and invited me to be his guest. At 3 P.M. he took me and Messrs. Soeda & Kamiya to the State Department and introduced me to Secretary Bryan who was most cordial and freely talked on the California question. He said he coined a new phrase “nothing final between friends" Viscount gave me on the other side to the soldiers homes[.]Mr. Hanihara gave me & Ushijima and Abiko drove around Rock Creek & invited us to a dinner at the Rest Gordon of The Raleigh Hotel.
