Left the house 8.30 in automobile. Mr. & Mrs. Ohori & Mr. Takiya came with me. Shirao & two other young men came to the steamer. Prinz Friedlich Wilhelm is a very large ship. But it is full. Somehow I do not like it very well. The day is
fine and the sea quiet. The deck is full of people and hardly any room to move about. Everybody is speaking German and I can not but feel that I am in a strange land or alien Sea. At the table there sits next to me［a］Roman Catholic priest who shakes terribly. Evidently he is a victim of smoking or drinking or both.
自動車で宿を8時30分に発つ。オオホリ夫妻とミスター・タキヤが同行。シラオと青年2人が汽船まで見送りに来てくれる。プリンツ・フリードリッヒ・ヴィルヘルムは非常に大きな船だ。それが満員である。どうも居心地がよくない。晴天で、海は穏やかである。甲板は人でごったがえし、動く隙間もないほどだ。皆ドイツ語を話しており、自分が見知らぬ土地、または異国の海にいる気がしてならない。その後テーブルにつくと隣にローマ・カトリックの神父が座り、ひどく体が震えていた。あきらかに煙草か飲酒、あるいは両方のせいであろう。
