In the 11th century, the Sarashina Diary written by Sugawara no Takasue’s daughter describes the landscape of ancient Musashino that Takasue’s daughter saw accompanied by her father returning to Kyoto from business in the eastern provinces. The road the father and daughter took is considered to have been the main road laid along the elevated land from Mitadai to Takanawadai. Later the thoroughfare was called the Nakahara Road, and as a result of archaeological excavation, we know that several ancient villages existed along the road, increasing the possibility that the Nakahara Road was an important ancient highway.
