Edo was a town that faced many natural disasters. Frequently struck in particular by earthquakes and fires, they had an immense effect on people’s lives. We can see something of the situation at excavation sites. For example, if a large earthquake occurs, lowlands experience the phenomenon of liquefaction, and we can observe traces in the form of jetted sand in the sedimentary layers at sites. Evidence of fires can be detected in the burnt layers and in the remains of structures that had been cleared away after the disaster. The process of trying to read and understand people’s actions and responses using the traces of these natural disasters that have been carved into the land continues.
