The feudal lord residence sites occupy the largest area among pre-modern archaeological sites, and excavation has revealed multiple layers of the remains of structures, so that it is possible to observe three-dimensionally the form of a residence below ground and changes to it. Also, the site of the Date family residence from the Sendai clan domain that stood on lowland is full of the remains of wooden construction and tree and plant-based remains, meaning we can see many aspects of a varied life within the residence, while at the site of the Mori family residence of the Hagi clan domain built on elevated ground, we can learn about the use of below ground by the remains of structures built by digging into the hard Kanto loam layer.
