Edo temples housed the graves of people from all social ranks, from Shogun, feudal lord and retainer, to ordinary people living in back-street shops, with the special features of each revealed by the results of pre-modern archaeology. Stone monuments and gravestones erected above ground, and remains of structures buried below ground, each reflect social status, and a comparative examination of graves has made it possible to shed light on the city with its system of rank.
