Shibakuruma-cho was a town where professional groups lived who were engaged in the transportation business using oxcarts. They were summoned from Kyoto by official order of the Shogunate in 1636 amidst the advancing construction of the early-period castle town, but even when their official duties had ended, they were allowed to remain in Edo at the will of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu, and it is said they were granted land Takanawa, which they named Shibakuruma-cho. Images of this group, busy transporting large-sized or heavy goods that could not be accommodated on horseback or hand-drawn carts, are depicted in scenes of floats at the Kanda Myojin festival etc.
