Daiba, Minato City, is a popular place for tourists. Popularly known as "Odaiba", it is home to Shinagawa Daiba (Uchiumi Odaiba/Shinagawa Odaiba), which was built by the shogunate on the occasion of the arrival of Perry's fleet on June 3, 1853. Initially 11 (and later 12) marine batteries were planned as a base for defending Edo Bay, and six were completed in just one year and four months. In an age with no machines, many batteries were created on the sea off Shinagawa through the large civil engineering work done entirely by man-power, from procurement of construction materials to construction.
