In the early modern-period Minato City area, we see numerous individuals who made achievements in politics, economics and culture, but of particular prominence must be Fukuzawa Yukichi and Katsu Kaishu. The Keio Gijuku established by Fukuzawa continues in the present day as an educational foundation with its headquarters located in Mita, and to produce outstanding individuals in all fields. Also, not only did Katsu use the Satsuma clan residence in Shiba to conduct talks about the surrender of Edo Castle, but he made his home many times in the Minato City area, and lived there until he died.
